The first time I tried to sex my mystery snails, I spent an embarrassing amount of time staring into the tank with a torch, second-guessing everything I thought I knew. Nobody warns you how genuinely tricky it can be. Mystery snails do not wear their sex on the outside. There are no dramatic size differences,…
When I first started keeping freshwater snails, choosing between nerite snails and mystery snails felt oddly difficult. Both are popular. Both are widely available. And both come with enthusiastic recommendations from seasoned aquarists. So which one is actually better — and better for whom? The honest answer is that neither is universally superior. They are…
Mystery snails have a way of surprising people. You bring home what looks like a small, coin-sized creature, drop it into your tank, and within a few months, you are staring at something considerably larger than you expected. For many aquarists — beginners especially — this raises an obvious question: how big can mystery snails…
Mystery snails are among the most beloved freshwater invertebrates in the hobby. Their calm temperament, striking appearance, and tank-cleaning habits make them a staple in community aquariums worldwide. But a question that comes up often — from nervous beginners and curious enthusiasts alike — is this: can mystery snails live out of water? The short…
One of the most practical questions new molly fishkeepers ask — and one that experienced keepers occasionally debate — is whether mollies actually need a heater in their tank. It sounds simple. But the answer depends on where you live, what species of molly you keep, and what you want from your fish in terms…
There is a particular kind of dread that every fishkeeper knows — the moment you look at your tank and realize something is wrong. A molly that was active yesterday is now hovering near the surface. Walk into any well-stocked aquarium store and you will almost certainly find molly fish — but which molly fish is the real question. The word “molly” covers a remarkably diverse group of varieties, from the sleek, jet-black common molly to the elaborate, sail-finned giants that command attention in any tank they inhabit. For a beginner,…
Molly fish have a reputation as peaceful, community-friendly fish — and for the most part, that reputation is well earned. In a properly set up tank, mollies are active, social, and largely harmonious. But ask any fishkeeper who has dealt with a persistently aggressive male or a tank full of stressed, harassed females, and you…
When people fall in love with molly fish — and it happens quickly, given how vibrant and lively they are — one of the first questions that follows is: how long will they live? It is a fair and important question. Understanding the natural lifespan of your fish helps you set realistic expectations, plan your…
One of the first practical skills every molly fishkeeper needs is the ability to tell males from females. It sounds simple, but many beginners spend weeks unsure of what they have in their tank — and that uncertainty leads to real problems. An unplanned overabundance of males causes chronic stress in females. An accidental all-female…
